Spring On The Upper Clackamas River
Spring is a magical time on the Upper Clackamas River. This is when Oregon’s lush forests awaken, waterfalls and the river surge with fresh snowmelt and outdoor recreation is at its peak. Whether you’re looking for thrilling whitewater rafting, peaceful hiking trails or scenic picnic spots, this stretch of the Wild & Scenic Clackamas River offers something for every traveler. Here’s what you can expect when visiting this stunning area in the spring.
Offering the closest whitewater rafting to Portland, the Upper Clackamas River naturally attracts those seeking thrilling rapids. With seasonal runoff from Mt. Hood, the river transforms into a whitewater paradise, offering class III and IV rapids perfect for adrenaline seekers. Local outfitters offer guided trips, ensuring both safety and an unforgettable experience. Whether you're an experienced paddler or a first-time rafter, spring is the best season to ride the rapids before water levels drop in late summer. Visit in May to attend the Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival and see some of the best whitewater experts in the world!
For those who prefer to stay on dry land, the trails of the Upper Clackamas River Corridor have been reopening after the 2020 wildfires. Reopened in fall of 2024, the Riverside Trail, stretching 3.7 miles from Rainbow Campground to Riverside Campground, offers a scenic out-and-back route journey through old-growth forests along the Oak Grove Fork of the Clackamas River. The trail features gradual climbs and occasional grade changes, showcasing river views, a beach area and impressive stands of ancient trees.
Mt. Hood Territory has a vast trails system for visitors of all experience levels. But you "otter" stay on trail. Going off trail can damage or kill certain plant and animal species, and can hurt the ecosystems that surround the trail. Always practice Leave No Trace principles: Leave rocks, vegetation and artifacts where you find them for others to enjoy.
As a bonus activity, when adventuring in the Upper Clackamas River Cooridor make sure to keep an eye out for the wildflowers. The elevation allows for the wildflower season to last throughout late spring and summer when the riverbanks become a vibrant canvas of colors.
In addition to rafting the Upper Clackamas River, the nearby sections of the river offer other boating opportunities. Rent a pontoon boat at Promontory Marina or take a guided kayaking or standup paddleboard tour with Clackamas River Outfitters. Enjoy the spring sunshine with friends. As a bonus, visit in the summer and make a weekend of it with a camping trip at Promontory Park.
A trip to the Upper Clackamas River isn’t complete without exploring the charming nearby communities. Stop by Estacada, a gateway to outdoor adventure, to grab a bite to eat or pick up a souvenir at a variety of local shops.
Visit Milo McIver State Park, across the river from Estacada, for disc golf, hiking, camping and water activities.
