When Wynn Berns arrived in Oregon in 2018, he did so for professional reasons — to help with a ski camp merger and rebuild what would become the Wy’East Mountain Academy near the Villages of Mt. Hood. Fresh from Vermont, Burns intended to stay just a few months. But as an action sports enthusiast, it wasn’t long before he fell in love with Mt. Hood area. “It was one of the only places in the world where you can bike and ski year-round,” he says. “It has some of the best trail systems and training facilities around.”
Enamored, Burns stuck around and eventually became the athletic director at the Wy’East Mountain Academy. By day, he helped future Olympians and would-be professional athletes develop their skills. By night, Burns shredded fresh powder and rode flowy trails.
Away from the slopes and trail systems, however, Burns found options for hanging out and building community lacking — so he decided to build one himself. In 2023, Burns launched Goodwynns in Welches. The shop has since become a hub of action sports activity — where riders can rent mountain bikes, get trail recommendations, grab coffee on the way to the trailhead and return afterward to mingle with fellow riders over craft beer and fresh food from on-site food carts.
Here’s how Burns did it, how Goodwynns has become a community hub and what to expect on your next mountain biking adventure on Mt. Hood.
Goodwynns Opens To Foster, Grow Local Mountain Biking Community
Burns worked with a lot of high school students at the Wy’East Mountain Academy, and he noticed that there were precious few places to hang out that weren’t dive bars.
That inspired him to launch Goodwynns, which today encompasses maintenance and rental services, up to four on-site food carts, a neighboring coffee shop and a cozy bar. “That’s basically where it stemmed from — just a place that was a little bit more community-, health- and sports-focused than a normal dive bar or sports bar.”
The idea behind the shop and bar, in particular, was to bring people together from all walks of life — a theme that has worked its way into just about everything Goodwynns offers. It provides the rare opportunity for novices and weekend warriors to mingle with professional riders in a laid-back setting. “We kind of joke that it’s the sports bar for action sports athletes — whether it’s skiing, snowboarding or biking,” Berns says. “It’s just a place we can go hang out and meet people that have similar and like-minded interests.”

Goodwynns Features A Wide Range Of Helpful Offerings
Today, Goodwynns is a one-stop shop for outdoor athletes on Mt. Hood. Its services and offerings include the following:
- Mountain bike and e-bike rentals: Riders of all skill levels and abilities can rent mountain bikes and e-bikes for adults and children, as well as bike racks, helmets and chargers for a worry-free ride.
- Maintenance and service: Riders can get a variety of tune-ups, custom bike builds, flat tire fixes, tire installations, brake adjustments and more.
- Recommendations: Goodwynns is staffed and frequented by avid mountain bikers who are happy to share trail recommendations, discuss conditions and help riders have the best possible experience. “Sometimes, it’s just good to come check in, sit at the bar and ask what trails are riding well and where we recommend to go,” Berns says. “Who knows? You might meet your favorite rider or learn something from a local trail builder.”
- Community rides: On occasion, Goodwynns leads community rides, in part, to bolster the local mountain biking scene. “We’re trying to introduce people and help them meet people they may not normally get to ride with or interact with,” he says.
- Demo bikes: Berns offers demo bikes at the nearby Sandy Ridge Trail System so riders can take them for a test drive before purchasing.
- Winter rentals and services: When the snow falls, Goodwynns also rents skis and snowboards, as well as necessary gear.
Food And Drink Options Add To The Charm At Goodwynns
When he opened Goodwynns, Berns figured that rentals and bike services were the first step to building community. Here’s more about how the next steps have unfolded.
- On-site bar: The bar inside Goodwynns pours beer, wine, cider and non-alcoholic beverages (such as craft root beer).
- Coffee shop: In June 2026, a second outpost from Mt. Hood Roasters opened in the Goodwynns building. Berns knew Marcy Landolfo, co-owner of Mt. Hood Roasters, through local mountain biking circles and says it was a no-brainer to team up on the new venture. “Being a mountain biker and a part of the community, that was an easy fit.”
- Food cart pod: Just outside Goodwynns, hungry athletes can grab a quick meal on their way up to (or coming back from) the day’s adventure. Up to four carts may be on site, with options that include Thai, Mexican and sandwiches.
