There’s a certain allure to the idea of holing up in a cabin in the woods. Moss-covered trees towering above, the crackle of a wood fire, the steam coming off a hot tub. All that and more can be found at the PortlandiAframe — a quintessential cabin getaway nestled in Welches, Oregon.
A-frame cabins are striking, with their namesake A-shaped construction, which not only looks aesthetically appealing, but is also functional to help reduce snow pile-up on the roof. PortlandiAframe takes things to the next level — with an impeccably designed high-pitched A-frame cabin that was constructed from scratch in 2024 and opened to guests in 2025. It was inspired by the well-recognized Dunlap Hollow A-frame Cabin in Ohio.

Hitting The River Trail In Welches
My trip to stay overnight at the A-frame cabin began with a favorite hike in the area — less than five minutes down the road at the Old Salmon River Trailhead. I wandered amongst towering old-growth trees, including impressively large Douglas Firs, spotting mushrooms along the way. The trail meandered down to the Salmon River, where I was able to spot spawning salmon in the crystal-clear waters. This was the ideal way to stretch my legs after making the drive to Welches and killing a bit of time before checking into the cabin.
Back at the car, it was a quick drive to the gravel road leading to the cabin. Even at first sight of the exterior, I was awestruck by the fascinating design of this stand-out cabin. Two points of framing meet at a tall point in the middle, with floor-to-ceiling windows to let in plenty of light. Looking at the structure straight on, it looks as if the front was constructed of multiple smaller triangles, forming a mesmerizing design.

Mt. Hood is a great location to spot salmon spawning in the fall.
A Modern A-Frame Cabin
Inside, I was met with a modern-meets-cozy interior with a statement orange wood-burning fireplace in the living area, a stocked kitchen with colorful tile, and a large dining table to gather a crowd. The first bedroom and one bathroom were on the main floor, with two additional bedrooms and another bathroom on the second floor. Swirling up the spiral staircase to the third floor, I found the sleeping loft with a floor bed tucked under where the point of the A-frame design meets. This provided a dreamy spot to relax with a good book or simply stare out the skylight windows above at the waving trees or the pitter-patter of raindrops on a moody day.
While the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking, pizza was on the menu instead. I ordered dinner from al Forno Ferruzza in Rhododendron, which happened to be available for delivery. Having a wood-fired caprese pizza and roasted beet salad brought right to the cabin door was a treat. It allowed for plenty more time cozying up to enjoy the space.

The interior of PortlandiAframe is modern, yet cozy.
Outside on the deck, there was an electric cedar sauna, which I enjoyed getting a lot of use out of. It was a tranquil space to warm and relax, with a cold plunge tub and outdoor shower just outside the sauna door. One of the key highlights for me was the cedar hot tub, which faced the A-frame under moss-covered trees and glistening string lights. While it is an electric hot tub, you can also enjoy a wood-fired hot tub experience for even more heat when a burn ban is not in effect. An EV charger, along with a unique beverage vending machine, was also on-site.
This was one of those places where I walked in and just kept saying “wow” in awe at all of the colorful details. The thought put into designing this cabin with every step and detail was clear. It was a wonderful space to be able to relax, clear my mind, be present, and be unbelievably cozy while doing so. Before bed, I watched a few episodes of a TV show next to the crackling fire, while my pup snored on the floor beside the couch.
In the morning before checking out, I drove down to Coffee Brewsters, under two miles away, in the Hoodland Shopping Center. I brought a latte back to the cabin to enjoy while soaking in the last few minutes of hot tub and sauna time. From there, all that was left to do was pack the car and hit the road, looking forward to next time.
