Are you looking for an easy and fun activity to get your kids into nature? Birding is a fantastic way to get outside, learn about native animals, create memories together and maybe even start a new hobby. Mt. Hood Territory offers a treasure trove of birdwatching opportunities, perfect for kids of all ages. Here are three great birding locations south of Portland, each with additional features to keep your little ones engaged. Grab your binoculars and see what you can find!

Boardman Wetlands Nature Park: Scavenger Hunt and Play

Bring your young adventurers to the Boardman Wetlands near Milwaukie where this 230-acre oasis provides a haven for diverse birdlife, from majestic hawks to colorful warblers. Turn your birding trip into a thrilling adventure with the downloadable scavenger hunt. Kids can have fun looking for birds, plants and animals, transforming your walk into a game. Want the kids to burn off even a little more energy? The wetlands also features a nature play area, perfect for playing on after spotting a few feathered friends.

Luscher Farm: Birds, Blooms and Barnyard Buddies

Luscher Farm near Lake Oswego offers a delightful blend of birding, botanical exploration and farmyard fun. The property and buildings are maintained as an agricultural example with the intent to interpret and educate interested visitors in local food and organic plant production. With walking trails winding through diverse habitats, kids can observe a variety of birds including in the chicken coop, which provides endless entertainment with its feathery residents. The farm offers Barnyard Tales where you can bring kids five and under for story time and some fun farm-themed activities. Make sure to register ahead of time as space is limited. For a bonus experience, visit the renowned Rogerson Clematis Garden, where you might spot hummingbirds drawn to the vibrant blooms.

Molalla River State Park: Family Friendly Trails and Ferry Rides

Start your birdwatching adventure by crossing the Willamette River on the Canby Ferry to reach Molalla River State Park. As one of only three remaining ferry crossings on the Willamette River, this is a fun way to travel. Once at the park, explore diverse habitats teeming with birdlife. The Pond Loop Trail is a favorite among families visiting the park. This short, easy loop provides ample opportunities to spot birds without overwhelming little legs. Keep an eye out for waterfowl gliding across the water even small reptiles and amphibians.

Bonus event! Each spring volunteers lead Great Blue Heron viewing and activities from the observation deck at Maddax Woods Park. Maddax Woods is home to one of the largest Great Blue Heron nesting areas in the Portland area. At these events your kids can try on life-size heron wings, learn about heron footprints, compare their height with a heron and learn lots of facts about these incredible birds.
