Tumwater Vineyard | West Linn
Modeled after a rustic barn with its large wooden beams, high ceilings and stone fireplace, the tasting room at Tumwater Vineyard is the stuff of rainy day dreams. Situated on top of Pete’s Mountain in West Linn, this property boasts some of the best views of Mt. Hood around. Post up on a plush couch beside logs crackling in the fireplace with your book and a glass of classic Oregon pinot noir or chardonnay, or opt for a tasting flight that rotates seasonally. In between pages, pair your sips with a chef-curated menu of seasonal nibbles like bacon-wrapped dates, crostini, salads, and charcuterie and cheese boards. If it happens to be dry out, find a patio spot next to an outdoor fire pit and admire views of the tranquil pond and acres of rolling vineyards against the spectacular mountain backdrop.
Keeper Coffee Co. | Milwaukie
Redolent of an old world fairytale, Keeper Coffee Co. in Milwaukie is one of the best public spaces to read the day away. This Portland-born café makes its second home in the exquisitely renovated historic Milwaukie City Hall building, where 1930s brick architecture conjures a bygone era. Once inside, you’ll immediately be enveloped in calming shades of muted green and the satisfying whirr and hiss of an espresso machine. Order from a delightful menu of specialty teas, handcrafted espresso drinks and fluffy, generously sized baked goods. They also have a fabulous seasonal brunch and lunch menu with favorites like quiche, breakfast sandwiches, salads and so much more. Upstairs, expansive multi-pane windows bathe the spacious seating area in covetable natural light. Adorned with antique furniture and décor, its nooks and crannies cultivate the perfect setting for pondering the meaning of life.
Canby Beer Library | Canby
The space that once housed a city library is now the Canby Beer Library, an 11,000-square-foot celebration of brews, bites and books.
This Canby taproom features exposed steel, orb-like lighting and a hip concrete bar offering 50+ taps of craft beers and house-made sodas. While its style leans industrial, the literary vibes are just as strong. Book-themed beer display boards and taster trays harken back to the building’s original use. You can also buy books in the merchandise area from the Friends of the Canby Library Book Garden. Stake your spot on a bench beside the damp echoes of stainless steel blending tanks and oak barrels. (Note the communal seating may call for noise cancelling headphones.) Or, take your pick of provisions from the food cart pod in the heated outdoor seating area beneath a permanent roof. If the elements abide, the steady drum of raindrops on the skylights makes for an enchanting reading atmosphere.
Timberline Lodge | Government Camp
No list of Mt. Hood Territory cozy reading spots would be complete without Timberline Lodge in Government Camp. Perched on the flank of Mt. Hood's peak, this legendary resort is home to more than year-round skiing. The focal point of the lodge is a stone-built chimney that provides multiple fireplaces woven into a single shaft across its stories. Snuggle up at the hearth in the wood smoke-scented lounge with a Snow Cap Dream Hot Chocolate — as dreamy as the name suggests — topped with whipped cream, toffee bits and chocolate and caramel drizzle. To avoid driving on mountain roads in snowy weather, hop aboard the Mt. Hood Express, which provides service from Sandy all the way up to Timberline.
