Adventures Without Limits (AWL) is redefining the way people experience the outdoors, allowing Mt. Hood Territory to become a hub for accessible and inclusive outdoor adventure tourism. Based in Forest Grove, Oregon, this nonprofit organization is on a mission to provide outdoor experiences for people of all abilities, ensuring everyone has the chance to explore the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
“This region is truly special because it offers so many opportunities for outdoor recreation," said Jennifer Wilde, Director of Outreach and Development at AWL. "You can be on the water one day and in the snow the next, all within a few hours of the Portland metro area. It’s the perfect balance—immersing yourself in wild and scenic landscapes while still having easy access to city services.”
AWL’s adaptive outdoor recreation programs include guided kayaking trips on the Willamette River, whitewater rafting on the Clackamas River and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on Mt. Hood. These adventures take place in the breathtaking landscapes of Mt. Hood Territory, making it a top destination for accessible outdoor adventures in Oregon. Each trip is designed to be inclusive, and that means gear as well. This includes sit-skis to support cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and outriggers and adaptive paddles for kayaking. But perhaps their best assets are the guides.
“Our guides are specially trained to lead programs that are as inclusive as possible," said Wilde. "We want to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability or background, can have a safe, enjoyable and accessible experience in nature.”
AWL believes that nature can inspire and connect people. Their trips are designed to break down barriers and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience the outdoors. By offering guided, inclusive trips in Mt. Hood Territory, AWL not only promotes equity in outdoor recreation but also supports local tourism by highlighting the area’s natural treasures.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful paddle, a scenic snowshoe or a rafting adventure, Adventures Without Limits invites you to explore Mt. Hood Territory’s incredible landscapes with them. View their calendar to book a trip and discover how they’re changing lives, one trip at a time.
One of AWL’s most popular activities is kayaking near Portland on the Willamette River, a prime destination for flatwater paddling in Oregon. This iconic waterway winds past many of the urban cities that make up Mt. Hood Territory.
Another favorite destination is Estacada Lake, located near Milo McIver State Park. This calm reservoir is ideal for beginners and families, offering tranquil paddling conditions surrounded by scenic forested hills. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-timer, these trips are a great way to connect with nature while enjoying the serenity of the water.
For those seeking an adrenaline-filled adventure, AWL offers whitewater rafting trips on the Upper Clackamas River. This section of the river features thrilling rapids and stunning scenery, making it a favorite for adventure enthusiasts. Guided by experienced AWL staff, participants navigate exciting Class II to Class IV rapids, ensuring both safety and an unforgettable experience.
During the winter months, AWL organizes snowshoeing trips on Mt. Hood. These excursions provide a magical way to experience the snow-covered landscapes while staying active. AWL’s guides ensure that all participants, regardless of ability level, can enjoy this quintessential winter activity with the help of adaptive equipment and personalized support. They even offer full moon snowshoe tours which provide the opportunity to experience Mt. Hood at night.
“There’s something truly special about getting into nature under a full moon," said Wilde. "The quietness of the snow at night, combined with the moonlight, creates a unique and peaceful experience. In winter, when the days are short, the moon provides a natural glow, offering a rare opportunity to explore the outdoors in a whole new way."
The old-growth forest of Mt. Hood provides a stunning backdrop for guided hikes, which AWL occasionally offers. Even if a guided hike isn’t available during your visit, Wildwood Recreation Site is a must-see destination. This scenic area features two accessible trails perfect for exploring nature at your own pace. The Wetlands Trail offers a boardwalk experience, allowing visitors to get an up-close look at the diverse wetland ecosystem. The Cascade Streamwatch Trail provides a rare opportunity to view underwater life in a stream that flows into the Salmon River, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s aquatic habitat. Whether you're on a guided hike or exploring solo, Mt. Hood’s old-growth forests and accessible trails make for an unforgettable outdoor experience.
