Thanks to a mix of unique indie acts, environmentally friendly practices and a commitment to ensuring a positive experience by limiting ticket sales, Pickathon music festival, held at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley for a summer weekend, has managed to make a big name for itself. Major publications like The New York Times, Billboard, Time Magazine and Rolling Stone have all recently joined an overwhelming chorus that sings the praises of this eclectic music festival that just oozes whimsy!
The lineup at Pickathon is a diverse selection of artists representing numerous genres and styles. Be it folk, blues, rock or soul, each act exudes a feeling of authenticity that is lacking from many of the acts found at other, more mainstream festivals. This years highly anticipated artists like Nathaniel Rateliff and Tyler Childers are examples of the clout the festival has gained over the years. Each performer takes the stage twice, a nice addition for music lovers torn between two acts at any given point in time. Sustainability has become just as big a part of the Pickathon experience as the music. Festival producers have set the goal of eliminating all plastic beverage containers, opting instead for reusable metal cups. Water is free of charge; guests are encouraged to fill their reusable containers at numerous points throughout the venue. Power is provided by a permanent solar array that generates enough electricity to offset a large percentage of the energy used by lights and food vendors. Three portable solar generators power the miles of trail lighting at the festival.
Pickathon has cemented its reputation as the summer music festival to attend for many. Tickets do sell out, so it's wise to grab them as early as possible. There are various packages to choose, including one day passes to full weekend admissions. Lodging isn't an issue either with onsite camping or several nearby hotels and motels, with festival shuttles providing easy transportation to and from the venue.
