Recreation – Mountain Climbing and Snow Sports

Early winter travelers to Mt. Hood were dedicated to their snow sports and all the mountain had to offer. Today, locals and visitors both young and old continue to take advantage of the year-round opportunity to ski and snowboard on the 11,245-foot dormant volcano. In addition to skiing and climbing, visitors can get maps and information on conditions for regional cross-country ski and snowshoe trails through the Mt. Hood Visitor Center in Welches (on Hwy. 26) – 888.622.4822.

Mountain Climbing

With 10,000 summit attempts per year, Mt. Hood is the second most-climbed mountain in the world, surpassed only by Japan’s Mt. Fuji. Climbing season is mid-April to mid-June and a wilderness permit is required. Groups must carry a Mountain Locator Unit and all climbers must sign-out at Timberline lodge before their climb and sign back in upon return.
