April 16 Marks the Start of Amtrak Service to Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory

Oregon City joins Amtrak Cascades route linking Seattle/Tacoma to Portland, Salem, Eugene and Albany, Ore.
WHAT: The train whistle will mean a little something different to Oregon City residents and businesses today as passenger trains will begin stopping in town instead of just passing through.  To mark the start of service to the area, Oregon City is hosting a Grand Opening Celebration at the new platform on Friday, April 16.

Select guests will ride the train into Oregon City, where they will be greeted by musicians, local residents and key officials including: Oregon City Mayor, Alice Norris; Congresswoman Darlene Hooley; Senator Kurt Schrader; Metro President, David Bragdon; Chair, Clackamas County Board of Directors, Bill Kennemer; and Gil Mallery from Amtrak. 

The train will board northbound passengers and continue on its route to Portland and Seattle.

From I-5: I-205 north or south, take Exit 10 (State Route 213).  Take a right at the first stoplight onto Washington Street.  The platform will be down ½-mile on the right at 1757 Washington Street.

BACK-GROUND: The new Oregon City stop is an addition to Amtrak's Cascades train service, which currently links Seattle, Tacoma and several smaller Washington cities to Portland, Salem Eugene and Albany, Ore.  South and northbound trains will each make two stops per day at the new Oregon City platform, located conveniently across the street from the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center.  Free parking is available at the platform and in the Interpretive Center parking lot.

Visitors wanting to explore the historic city will be able to walk or take the city bus or trolley to a variety of sites, including the Dr. John McLoughlin House, the Oregon City Municipal Elevator, the Museum of the Oregon Territory, and Willamette Falls Locks, Museum and Viewpoint.  Amtrak scheduling information can be found at www.amtrakcascades.com.
