Snowplay puts Oregon's Mt. Hood Territory top of mind this season. Trek out for a moonlight snowshoe or get onboard for a giddy snowmobile ride with Mt. Hood Adventure. Take the kids tubing, explore a bit of backcountry on your telemarks or skijor with your Samoyed. The Mt. Hood area boasts over 200 miles of trails and powder enough to plow through most winter activities you can dream up. The convenient new Timberline Express Ski Shuttle offers roundtrip transportation from Portland area hotels to Timberline Lodge & Ski Area,  Monday - Friday, January 4 - March 12, 2010. The Villages of Mt. Hood offer vacation rentals from historic cabins to comfy condos. All Seasons Property Management, Mt. Hood Vacation Rentals and An Oregon Experience are the local experts in helping you choose which unique property fits your unique needs.

Travel with your best friend or bring the whole entourage and vacation where a kitchen is close at hand and it is easy to take advantage of multi-day discounts. Cook up a good time with this Chicken with Sauteed Chanterelles recipe from the local Still Creek Inn - or stop by for dinner and they'll prepare it for you. Having a good time here is as easy as sledding downhill.

Just to the south of Portland proper, the community of Lake Oswego is known by many for its posh boutiques, multi-day Festival of the Arts, a resplendent summertime Farmers Market and historic Hunt Club. It also has a justly deserved reputation for upmarket dining and innovative chefs. The return of a traditional Happy Hour makes sampling the rarefied L.O. fare stupendously affordable. Oswego Lake House swings with music Monday through Sunday, and a Happy Hour held between 4 and 6.

Five Spice Restaurant dishes up the goods weekdays from 3 - 6, with a tasty $5 menu. Zagat-acclaimed Clarke's offers 50% off "bar grub" Monday - Saturday from 4:30 - 6. At Terrace Kitchen, the Divinas husband and wife team offer "Five at Five" Tuesday to Saturday (of course, they also offer fabulous cooking classes, team building events and winemaker's dinners, but we suggest you schedule ahead for those). Manzana Rotisserie Grill takes the cake with two Happy Hours, held daily from 3 - 6 and 9 to close.

Wrap your arms around the next big holiday when you celebrate the love on Valentine's. The Resort at The Mountain gets dolled up for Wine, Roses and Romance anytime you're ready to rumble. Rose petals sprinkled on the bed, tea lights, wine and cheese fireside, followed by scrumptious breakfast for two at trendy Altitude restaurant. An ultimate Resort Spaaaaa experience is the perfect chaser.

Put on your Western Formal attire and break a leg at the Molalla Buckeroo Cowboy Ball. St. Josef's Winery invites you in for a memorable Valentine's Day Winemaker dinner. Top off the weekend with a Skydive Oregon experience that is likely to send your sweetie into freefall. What better way to say that you're head over feet than when you take the leap holding hands?

Plunge into the North Clackamas Aquatic Park after you jump in valley rainpuddles and wade in mountain snowdrifts. Young ones love the wave pool surf and the challenge of the 29-foot rock wall, and a few laps will work off December's gingerbread. Clackamas Town Center offers a refuge for the creatively challenged as it’s easy to divide and conquer with a 20-screen movie theater and tax-free shopping options that range from classic to au courant. The Monarch Hotel is an easy MAX ride from PDX or downtown, and offers a complimentary shuttle to one of Oregon's largest tax-free shopping centers.

Wilsonville's Family Fun Center tee up an active day of recreation with miniature golf, bumper boats and laser tag. Next door, Bullwinkle's Restaurant features kid-friendly fare, and the Wilsonville Inn & Suites wraps it up with an indoor pool and continental breakfast buffet. Pat's Acres in Canby gets your engine racing with their go-kart wonders - call ahead for weather-related hours.

I love winter and the great gift of being outdoors in it. In fact, I wax so enthusiastic about the joys of downhill that my girlfriend has been inspired to try it for herself. Mt. Hood Skibowl has a screaming deal with their three-day "Guaranteed Learn to Ski/Ride" lessons. Program completion earns you half off lift tickets and rentals for the rest of the season. Oregon's early snow pack provided stellar conditions, and Skibowl's quality of instruction was sufficient to get us off the lifts and down the hill after only the second lesson. Just off the Lower Bowl run, the Euro-style Warming Hut with its bird's-eye views and cozy interior were a heady payoff for just two mornings spent in training. The instructors were awesome, and suitably impressed that she was determined to master a new sport in her 5th decade of life. One of the mountain's great values is offered by Collins Lake Resort in Government Camp - spend the night and pick up on the free Porch to Powder shuttle the next morning. Stay two nights at Collins Lake and ski free midweek. Government Camp and the Villages of Mt. Hood offer a fine selection of apres ski with live music and local color. See you on the slopes!
