This annual Pioneer Dinner and Barn Dance in Eagle Creek includes hearty fare inspired by the meals pioneering entrepreneur Philip Foster served the Barlow Road wagon trains. On August 29, square dancing demonstrations and lessons, silent auction and hammered dulcimer performances are part and parcel of old-fashioned fun in a historic setting. Advance reservations are required for meal, but dancing after 6 p.m. is open on a drop-in basis. Just three weeks later at the Blackberry Jam and Dutch Oven Cook-off sounds off with an acoustic music festival serving up live performances and jam sessions from Oregon's liveliest folk musicians. Not performance oriented but geared toward musicians having fun together, this event is also a stirring way for cooks to compete in their outdoor culinary skills. The end of September brings the 32nd annual Cider Squeeze and Harvest Festival, where you are welcome to bring your own apples or press the varieties offered by the farm. Textile and wood crafters, blacksmithing demonstrations, living history exhibits, food and live music all day accompany this autumn extravaganza. Both the Blackberry Jam and the robustly popular Cider Squeeze are free of admission. Membership privileges go to support the ongoing Philip Foster Farm programs and include 20% gift shop discount.

Well-known executive chef Leif Eric Benson has declared open season on spicing up the mid-day culinary fare at iconic Timberline Lodge. The lodge's culinary team has reached out to local food purveyors to sate the cravings of regional foodies with a different theme each week of the summer. "How to" food demonstrations add to the flair of the gorgeous spreads on select days of the week. I wish that I could say that I've had the opportunity to sample each of the different culinary themes. To date, the brunch has focused on strawberries, cherries, (which I can personally attest to being flavor-rich and ingeniously prepared), lamb, hazelnuts, pink shrimp, Dungeness crab, albacore tuna, potatoes, pears, and local coffee roasters. That's a bounteous array to satisfy even the most variety-driven palate! The caliber and selection of fresh local foods serves the appetites of travelers in search of food lovingly prepared in Timberline's lofty setting. A Farmers Market Brunch Fall Culinary Series begins in September focusing on wines, wild mushrooms, meats, and all the autumn produce harvests which make Oregon one of the most desirable food regions in the world.
